In the 19th century, the cutlery industry in Switzerland was well established though it did not have the same means for mass production as did Solingen. The country relied heavily on the steel magnate for its imports for years until Swiss Cutler Karl Elsener founded the Swiss Cutlery Guild and began manufacture of the Offiziersmesser (officer knife) for the Swiss army. It was particularly handy for dismantling rifles with its built-in screwdriver and for opening canned food. The recent version of the solider knife released in 2008 (Soldatenmesser 08) includes a serrated lockable blade, wood saw, can opener with small 3mm screwdriver, lockable bottle opener with 7 mm screwdriver, wire bender, Phillips screwdriver, reamer and key ring.
