Elisha Gray invented the first electric synthesizer in 1876. By the early 1980s, Yamaha began selling compact, modestly priced synthesizers for musicians. Synthesizers are also used in space for satellites as local oscillators, reference signal generators for phase locked loops and sources for calibration systems. Designer and illustrator McPharlin assembles cardboard miniature retro synthesizers by hand as an ongoing personal project.
