Mongrels in Common

According tho the encyclopedia the word mongrel refers to mixed ancestry. In botany, a mongrel may refer to the offspring of varieties of a species which was in contrast to a hybrid. Among pets, one whose parentage is of unknown or mixed breeds as opposed to purebred. Among humans, mongrel and mongrelize are derogatory terms for the mixing of races, known as miscegenation. And in fashion terms there is a German label "Mongrels in Common" Livia Ximénez Carrillo und Christine Pluess, claiming to stand for fusion of different cultures and the results are surprisingly good.

In their upcoming collection, the designer duo have tried to combine the conventional charm of Bonn (Germany) with the cosmopolitan influences of the metropolis New York. Their style model for the collection is a mixture of Hannelore Kohl and Grace Jones – a mix of elegant, feminine elements and extravagant finesse. Their latest collection an interplay of various forms and qualities: tulip-shaped silhouettes define the collection. Draped, loose tops are combined with narrow-cut trousers, while special emphasis is placed on the shoulders. High quality grade natural fibres such as silk, cotton, cashmere, nanai leather and gabardine are combined with coated materials and fabrics with a metallic lustre. This look is enhanced by the unique collar pins, also made of gold for this collection, known from classic mens’ shirts.

Three questions to
Livia Ximénez Carrillo und Christine Pluess

Qompendium: Almost all designers claim they have integrated the perfect blend and are the fusion of two contradictory
styles. What is your approac
h? And Is your collection aimed to an international target group?

The desigenrs: Mongrelism is the essence of every "mongrels in common" collection. For us it is the most natural approach since both of us are true mongrels. Our collection is for everyone.

Will they understand the concept of Hannelore Kohl?
It is not that important whether the consumer understands our inspiration. The inspiriation is for us, in order to find new designs and details. It is the same with the two of us: it is important for our personalities, that we have multicultural backgrounds but it is not important that people can tell where we come from.

Do you think Grace Jones will be flattered or rather angry? According to an interview with Grace Jones', she hates it, when she as a brand is misused or cited inappropriately as a reference to others...
Being famous and an exceptional personaltity as Grace Jones she has to accept that she is an inspiration to others. But we think she will be flattered.
