Straight and Upfront: Marcus Luft – Fashion Director, Journalist, Blogger

Opinionated, fashion connoisseur Marcus Luft stays straight and upfront giving us an insight into his realm with some snap shots of his life and surroundings. Amazingly Marcus Luft first wanted to be a priest, thanks to the non-existing God he went for journalism. As he is the imperious Fashion Director at Gala we all might be assuming he lives the life of a notorious fashion party animal, but surprisingly this not the case. We met Marcus Luft in Berlin and were charmed by his genuine personal self and his in-depth passion for textiles, craftsmanship and even independent publishing.

The early years ...
At age six, I was pretty certain of becoming a priest, sometime later it was about being a doctor. But I made it to a journalist. After my philosophy studies and Henri-Nannen School for Journalism I worked as "sex" and "travel" editor for "AMICA". Back then Christiane Arp was the Fashion Director for AMICA and she convinced me that there were not many people writing about fashion. Therefore, I started secretly working for Stern, Die Woche and NZZ. That is how I slipped into the fashion world.

Now big in the fashion journalism ...
For the past three years, I am the Fashion Director for Gala. At the same time I pursue my own blog – “tooposhtopush.twoday.net”. My credo: Those who love fashion may also criticize it. And just because one gets dressed in the morning does not mean that one has knowledge about fashion realm. Unfortunately there are too many of these kinds around especially in the blogging world. I am trying to do something to the contrary.

Spießer-Deluxe ...
As I know that many people strive to be my friend due to my oh-so-important position and not necessarily due to my personality, I favor not to socialize with the fashion crowd in my private live. I am a “Spießer deluxe”. I hang around on my sofa, go for a walk with my dog “Olaf” along the riverside of the Elbe or simply like to go to the gym. I am not much of a party animal. If you will, I am a party pooper. I am not loud. I am quiet. I do not like to talk much. I prefer to listen. And I cannot dance either. I therefore feel uncomfortable in clubs mostly. Therefore, I do not go there at the first place.

Working in Fashion ...
Regarding fashion, I firmly believe that one can only work in the fashion if one deals with the subject round-the-clock. Fashion professionals do not have a closing time or free time, no vacations or so. Subconsciously they always work. I do. I scan everything: What are people wearing? Which socks are the boys wearing on the street? What do the women value? I find it thrillingly to watch, how slow, sometimes even years later, a certain style succeeds and becomes a trend on the streets.

The hype of Fashion and Fashion Blogging ...
I think that the majority of the people know far too little about fashion, although they secretly believe, that anyone could work in the fashion industry. This is definitely not the case. I don’t talk about literature, as I simply know too little. Only after spending time for many years at  diverse fashion weeks, I am now finally able to form an opinion on fashion.

And exactly therefore, I see the hype of the fashion blogosphere with a critically eye. Not everybody who gets dressed in the morning has automatically the knowledge about fashion. And that is the problem with all these blogs out there. Commenting something online doesn’t mean also understanding the subject thoroughly. And I have also seen that many bloggers are easily bribed, which makes me furious. But well that is another story.

My own blog ...
I am part-time blogger myself too. If I notice something that pleases me or I find something terrible, I write about it at tooposhtopush.twoday.net Perhaps I do not have so many "Followers" as other blogs and I don’t care about the quantity. I know there are the right sort of people who appreciate my work and their feedback is not bad sofar.

German airports and business men ...
I suffer at the airports. When I see how poorly most of the business people in Germany are dressed. I dream of taking on the style power and explaining to everyone how they can dress elegantly at such moments. Now, let me quote Karl Lagerfeld here: "Fashion is not democratic and it has nothing to do with taste".
