The Ingenious Axel Hoedt

It is an infinite pleasure to have our Q&A answered by the ingenious Mr. Axel Hoedt – a citizen of Freiburg im Breisgau as being born there in 1966. He studied photo design at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld and since 1999 he made the decision to live and work in London. Needless to say that he has been awarded a multitude of top notch awards in the field of photography. His work is meticulously choreographed yet the viewer would not be able to grasp the setting at first sight; there is always a thin line between a portrait and a documentary, between art and reality, between the surreal and the fiction.

How does sexuality play a role in your work?
all depends on the person you play with, and how you feed on each other...
but mostly in a very subtle kind of way...

Do you find you explore aspects of yourself through your subjects?
isn’t this the whole point of photography ….?

Black and White vs. Color.
am always trying for color, and am mostly ending up using a black and white image.

Give an instance where you have benefited from failure.
there is usually a fair amount of trial and error, aka a playfull approach to photography,  but the most significant failure was
a double exposure for the “Once a year” Series,  by my assistant who forgot to unload the already exposed film.

Men or Women?

Is there an aspect of photography that you find "primal"?
in a way the need to search, and to keep surely are. Whether this applies to photographic images,
or is already a step ahead, is something i am not sure about. The process originally surely is.

Do you care what other people think?
Yes i do. Even though most of times my friends think that i am a stubborn bastard that doesn’t…
